Mount Ainslie is a good place to get your bearings in Canberra. These two photographs also make it a good place to get your bearings in time.

The first comes from the Mildenhall collection. Its catalogue gives a date range of 1921 to 1935 and describes a view down Anzac Parade. In the second, photographer Rob Woodall returned to the view on Anzac Day, 25 April 2011.

Look for the line towards Parliament House and the shapes of the hills. Then notice the lake, the buildings and the trees that fill out the later view.

The photographers’ framing is slightly different. Moving the slider helps compare what changed, but it is not a precise alignment of every object. And 2011 is already part of Canberra’s history: this is a dated rephotograph, not a live view.
