Before the traffic and the shopfronts we recognise, there was work like this.
The archive describes this photograph as a steamroller spraying tar in Mort Street, Canberra City. The equipment, the road surface and the people doing the work take centre stage.
The Mildenhall collection gives a date range of 1921 to 1935. We do not know the names of the workers shown here. A photograph can preserve someone’s working day while leaving the most personal part of the story unrecorded.
Did anyone in your family work on Canberra’s roads? Names, dates and old work photographs would help put people back into this history.
