Hotel Ainslie · catalogue range 1921–1935

Hotel Ainslie, before the city filled in

A substantial hotel, a road at its door, and room to see right across to the hills.

Hotel Ainslie’s pale walls and tiled roofs beyond open ground, with scattered buildings and hills in the distance.
Hotel Ainslie on Limestone Avenue Catalogue range: January 1921–December 1935. National Archives of Australia, A3560, 4276 — Mildenhall collection. CC BY 3.0 AU. Original archive image; no generated detail or retouching.

The hotel is easy to pick out. There are so few trees to hide it. Its tiled roofs and pale walls stand above the road, with low buildings and open ground stretching away towards the hills.1

This is Hotel Ainslie on Limestone Avenue, photographed for the collection now held by the National Archives of Australia. The exact match is A3560, item 4276. The catalogue gives the broad range January 1921 to December 1935; it does not establish a single year for this photograph.1

The same archive page has a later view by Conrad Burden, dated 19 January 2013. Trees now hide much of the scene. Burden explains that he used a slightly different position because of the vegetation, so the two photographs should not be treated as an exactly aligned comparison.2

Look back at the older view and notice how clearly the individual buildings stand apart. Do you have a family connection to the hotel, or a photograph taken here that could help fill in the years between these views?1, 2
