1960s–2026
A growing district beside an older river landscape
Molonglo Valley is on Ngunnawal Country, and its recent development sits beside landscapes with much longer histories. On its western side, Stromlo's planted forest became a public recreation area in 1967. The forest was devastated by the 2003 bushfires, and the recreation park that followed officially opened in 2007.1, 2
The new neighbourhoods brought a different pattern of everyday life to the valley. Coombs and Wright were designed around access to amenities and their natural surroundings. Together with Denman Prospect and Whitlam, they now form communities linked by parks, schools and local services. The Suburban Land Agency's account also records the Mingle programme's role in helping residents establish their own activities and connections.3
Planning has continued to change as the district grows. Community consultation about Molonglo reaches back to the 2004 Canberra Spatial Plan. In February 2024, the ACT Government began work to seek town-centre status for the planned commercial centre. A town-centre master plan was released in May 2026. It describes a place still being built in stages, making the district's development an ongoing chapter.1, 4
